The process

Select a range of your own garments. You could even buy a few items from a charity store and take them apart to investigate their construction. Work with five garments, choosing a variety of difficult pieces.

You need to be able to look directly down on the clothes from above, rather than at an angle, so lay them out on the floor instead of on a table.

Lay them out as simply as possible, with no creases. Avoid overlapping sleeves with garment fronts; either place sleeves to the sides or fold them over on themselves. Take photos of the laid-out garments. These will be easier to draw from and will help you relate to the clothes as flat shapes.

Using a fine black felt-tip pen and working on a layout pad, start to draw exactly what you see. The first few drawings will take the most time to complete. After that you can place one of the initial drawings underneath each fresh page in your pad to use as a starting point as you sketch the next one. This will save you time as you draw the collection, ensuring proportions are kept the same and emphasizing similarities of outline that will give the selection of garments cohesion as an illustrated collection. Remember to describe every aspect of the garments, including their proportions, seam details, trims, pocket positions, necklines, and sleeve and body shapes, as well as front and back views. You can outline your drawings with a slightly thicker black pen to highlight the garment silhouette.

If you are finding it difficult to get going, start by tracing in pencil over your photographs and then work over the pencil outlines in pen. In this way you will build up a set of drawings that you can use as a foundation for other drawings.

Finally, refer to your previous creative illustrations and make working drawings of these. As you take the

With practice, working drawings can be produced with great speed. As the illustrations here demonstrate, they are very useful either mounted on a presentation board, giving details that might otherwise have cluttered up the Illustration, or as part of the creative process, representing existing garments to provide a basis for related but original designs. Traced over on a layout pad, working drawings can be used in the same way as figure drawings to generate ranges of ideas. The ability to make working drawings is a useful skill for a designer to show in a portfolio, because commercial designers are more likely to work with this type of drawing than any other. Clarity and accuracy are the goal. Working drawings should communicate effectively the precise construction, proportion, and embellishment of the design, so much so that they could be handed over to a pattern cutter or machinist in the confidence that the ideas will be re-created exactly.
