For well over a thousand years, embroidery has been a means of adding decoration to clothing, persona] accessories and household or church furnishings. Embroidery is the art of applying decoration by needle and thread to the surface of a piece of cloth or canvas, often being a picture or pattern.

Hand embroidery does not rely on complicated equipment and techniques. It is a process in which the simplest of materials can suffice to enable you to create beautiful artwork. In recent years, there has been a return to the popularity of hand-created craft styles, such as sewing, knitting and crochet, In a world that is now dominated by computers and digital technology, many people find these straightforward old-fashioned activities enjoyable.

Many variations of stitches and techniques have evolved over the centuries. All you need to begin is a needle, some fabric and a selection of embroidery threads. If you are new to embroidery, it would be a good idea to refer to the stitch book listed in the Further Reading section (p. 196) for extra guidance.
