Interaction

Some of the best locations are those that your subject can interact with. Because you are dealing with clients who aren't models, it is much easier for them to pose if you provide them some sort of environment to interact with. Whether it's a rock to sit on or a doorway to lean in, if there is a natural way for clients to interact with the environment, they will feel calmer and cooler.

When clients are just standing in front of the environment, it draws a great deal of attention to their clothing and pose, whereas if they are interacting with the environment, there is great emphasis placed on the story and surroundings.

Also, when subjects are able to interact with the environment, it is a bit like assuming the mindset of a character in a play. They begin to transform into the character they are playing. They are better able to enter the role they envision and pose when they feel they have entered another realm.

In Figure 2.2, the subject climbed on top of a train at noon. The light was not perfect, but the contrast of the sky and train created this graphic image. The subject was able to interact with the location by sitting or standing on different parts of the train. If the subject had simply stood in the foreground with the train in the background, it would have been a less interesting image.

Your images will become more interesting if you find ways for your clients to interact with interesting environments.

As talked about in the previous chapter, you should try to tell stories with your images to engage your viewer and create compelling images. Locations can be one great way to tell a story. In Figures 2.3 and 2.4, the location helps to create a cute wedding narrative. These images, from a trash the dress session, tell the story of a wedding couple "gone fishing" on their wedding day. (A trash the dress session occurs after the wedding and often involves the bride posing in unusual locations or doing unusual things that risk ruining ["trashing"] the dress.) The images are playful, fun, and unusual. Unusual images will be more memorable, so your clients will cherish them more.

Funny Fishing Weddings

Figure 2.4

I'm sure many die-hard fishermen would love to fish on their wedding day. Making this wish a reality creates a funny and entertaining image.
