Model Mayhem and Other Social Networks

Model Mayhem is a social network for photographers, models, hair stylists, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists, and other industry professionals. As a photographer, you can create a profile of your best work and include your contact information and a brief bio or artist statement.

From there, you can begin browsing the site for other people you'd be interested in collaborating with. Under the Browse section, you can search for people based on city or ZIP code and add them as a friend, as seen in Figure 3.2. You can send personal messages stating your desires to collaborate, or simply "friend" people whose work you admire.

In short, you can use Model Mayhem to find hair stylists, makeup artists, and wardrobe stylists in your area who might be interested in collaborating on your fashion flair (or other fashion photography) shoots.

Model Mayhem allows you to post casting calls, as seen in Figure 3.3. Basically, you are creating an online Model Mayhem ad where you indicate the date of the shoot, the type of person you are looking for (hair, makeup, and so on), the compensation for the shoot (paid shoot or just for practice), and any other related information (like the concept). People who are interested in my shoot and what I have to offer can respond to the post. I then sort through the respondents and choose the people I want to work with. It's as easy as that.

Whenever you need to hire hair, makeup, or wardrobe professionals, you can put an ad out (casting call) to see who is interested in fulfilling the position at a predefined rate.

I have used Model Mayhem on many of my fashion flair shoots; it has helped me connect with creatives who later became an essential part of my fashion team. When I travel, Model Mayhem is essential because it allows me to post casting calls in a region so I can find a team in an area I am unfamiliar with.

Although I seldom use Model Mayhem now that I have a steady creative team, it was essential in the beginning for me to make connections with other creatives and find people I could eventually rely on to help me build my fashion flair name.

Caution

The people on Model Mayhem are not held by a code of ethics or rules, which can be problematic. People sometimes cancel at the last minute or may never even show up to a shoot. When using Model Mayhem, be sure to meet the people you are working with beforehand or at least talk to them on the phone a few times to discuss your concepts. I recommend that you have a test shoot (unpaid) before doing any paid work to be sure that the creative team shows up on time and produces quality work. Once I find a team I can rely on, I avoid using Model Mayhem for important paid shoots because of the inherent risk of no-shows.

Model Mayhem is not the only social network of its kind. Several others have similar objectives, including Model Run (http://www.modelrun.com/) and One Model Place (http://www.onemodelplace.com/), but Model Mayhem has the largest active membership and therefore the greatest chance to find someone for your team. In addition to Model Mayhem, I have used more traditional social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to reach out to creatives I am interested in.
