To the student with untrained eye the lines of an over-skirt, panier, and puft seem very confusing, but after studying and drawing the three figures G, H, and I, the literal meaning of the lines will be understood, and the student will be able to use this knowledge to great advantage when sketching from a costume.
Depicting the qualities of fabric accurately brings authenticity to a fashion illustration. To achieve a professional standard of fabric representation, develop an understanding of different fabrics and observe the way in which they drape and fall on the body. The best way to gain this knowledge is to sketch clothed figures. Notice the shapes the fabric makes around the body, rarely lying flat but moulding itself around the contours of the figure. Observe the way that looser garments hang while tighter fabrics stretch on the body, and practise drawing the effects. It would be useful to collect a range of fabric samples and practise drawing them, observing the way they fold and fall. It is also worthwhile visiting a museum or gallery and sketching from figurative sculptures to discover how fine fabrics are cleverly rendered in heavy stone. Visit the old-master paintings, too, to observe how these artists skilfully represented fabric.
An important factor in this process is to learn to be comfortable with thinking out loud on paper. This means feeling relaxed about noting down your ideas and sketching out series of designs. You must learn to love your roughs A blank page can be intimidating, and it is easy for the novice designer to become so concerned with the appearance of the initial sketches that the actual design process takes second place. With practice you will gain confidence and be more relaxed about encouraging the flow of ideas. Remember that you are just developing your thoughts, not trying to create a masterpiece. Paul Poiret received a baccalaureate in science and business from the Ecole Massillon, all the while sketching and draping fashions inspired by his love of theater and fine art. Geoffrey Beene graduated from high school in Haynesville, Louisiana, when he was sixteen. In 1943 he enrolled in Tulane University to study medicine but soon found himself sketching dress designs in his Gray's Anatomy text. Realizing that medicine was not his true calling, Beene moved to Los Angeles in 1946, where he enrolled at the University of Southern California and worked as a display assistant at I. Magnin department store. While at I. Magnin, Beene continued sketching his design ideas and was encouraged by the store president to pursue a career in fashion design. In 1947 Beene moved to New York to study fashion at the Traphagen School. Rhodes is primarily known as a print designer and colorist. She entered the fashion industry during 1960s swinging London, and was influenced by pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol as well as textile designer Emilio Pucci. Rhodes draws her inspiration from everyday objects, nature, and textures. She works by repeatedly sketching motifs until they are highly stylized and abstract. Her prints contain whimsical interpretations of lipstick tubes, lightbulbs, shells, lilies, chain knits, laces, ruffles, and feathers. Rhodes brought the pop art of the 1960s to textile design and, in turn, to apparel design. The silhouettes of Rhodes's apparel are dictated by the textile design. Her tendency to design large-scale directional motifs places limitations on the apparel she can design. Rhodes primarily designs garments with long flowing panels to show her textiles motifs to their full advantage.
