Bridge: A price category that "bridges" the price point gap between designer collections and better fashions in men's and women's apparel.

Designer: The price category for high-fashion collections with limited production and distribution. These collections are often referred to as "signature collections."

Direct Mail: A form of retail sales where materials such as catalogues or letters are mailed directly to individual customers.

Fad: A short-lived fashion which is rapidly adopted and then quickly discarded and has little or no impact on the direction of fashion.

Fashion: The styles presented each season that are adopted and worn by the majority of a demographic group.

Haute Couture: A French term applied to the original garments, or high fashions, designed by couture houses. Haute couture fashions are distinguished by luxury fabrics, fine detailing, hand sewing, and custom fit.

Licensing: A contractual agreement between a manufacturer and designer which allows the manufacturer to apply the designer's name to the merchandise it produces and market it in exchange for a percentage of sales. The designer may or may not take an active role in the design of the products being produced.

Mass Merchandiser: Retailers who sell mass-produced fashions at moderate to low price points.

Merchandiser: An individual responsible for researching the fashion preferences of a company's target customer and directing the creative processes of the designer to ensure the designs developed are consistent with the customers' preferences.

Multichannel Distributor: A manufacturer who sells goods to wholesalers and retailers and who sells goods to the ultimate consumer through manufacturer-owned retail operations.

Pret a Porter: A French term for ready-to-wear collections produced in France. French pret a porter retains aspects of haute couture while integrating manufacturing techniques of mass merchandisers.

Private Label: Merchandise that is designed and manufactured by a retailer for exclusive sale through its retail operations.

Product Development: A team approach utilized by manufacturers to design product lines targeted to specific customers. The design team typically comprises a merchandiser, a designer, and a product manager.

Ready-to-Wear: Apparel manufactured in factories based on standardized measurements and size classifications.

Retailer: A business that sells goods purchased from wholesalers and manufacturers to the ultimate consumer.

Wholesaler: A distributor or vendor who purchases products from a manufacturer and sells them to retailers.
